Kapow Photowalk – Cardiff Bay

This weekend myself and Karl arranged the inaugural Kapow Photography Photowalk. It was basically an excuse to get out with the camera and chat about all things photography. We got in touch with a few friends on Facebook and chatted about possible locations for it to be held. We settled on Penath Pier and Cardiff Bay.

Checking the weather forecast all week we were worried that we were going to get a cloudy, rainy day. Luckily the day turned out to be absolutely perfect. Sunny with scattered clouds that offered stunning backgrounds for the photographs all day long.

Meeting at Penarth in the afternoon we introduced ourselves to the new photowalkers and planned the day. To add a bit of interest we all had to draw a photographic ‘subject’ out of a hat. They included Red, Motion, Decay, Complex and Simon’s favourite ‘Credit Crunch’. We all then had to go and get the photograph that we thought best illustrated the subject. This meant that it made us slow down and actually think about the subject and composition instead of walking around rattling off photos using your camera like an Uzi.

After a walk around Penarth we headed over to Cardiff Bay for a coffee and the second leg of the walk. It was around 4pm now and the sun was getting low in the sky. This meant that the conditions for photography were perfect. We even got a rainbow that hovered over the Wales Millennium Centre for a while offering us a great chance for some creative shots.

Myself and Karl were both using our new lenses. Both 24-70mm f2.8 but mine in the Canon ‘L’ series and Karl, the only Nikon shooter on the walk using the Nikkor equivalent. We bought them primarily for weddings as the zoom range and large aperture make them the lens of choice for the Wedding Photographer. This was to be the first real test of the new gear and it was a good chance to get to grips with the new equipment. There was still a smidgen of ‘Lens Envy’ mind you when Mr Hodges got out his ‘Surface to Air Missile’ of a lens, the Sigma 150-400mm!

It is really important to remember however that you can create fantastic images using the most basic of ‘Point and Shoot’ cameras and there is no substitute for a keen eye. Some of my favourite photographs have been taken with my 8 year old 3 megapixel compact camera.

If you are a photographer of any level that is interested in joining us on the next Photowalk please get in touch either by ringing 07590 551042 or sending an email  to info@kapowphotography.co.uk

The more people that come on the walk the better. It’s a great opportunity to learn and trade tips on all things photography.

Also, if you have any ideas for the location of the next Photowalk, let us know. Somewhere around South Wales, Cardiff, Newport, Cwmbran or Swansea would be perfect.
