Your wedding photography on USB memory card

Wedding Photography on Memory Sticks

Both myself and Dave are constantly trying to improve our wedding photography offering and the service we provide to brides, not just on the day of the wedding but starting before the wedding day and right up through to the delivery of the photographs, album design process and final delivery of the album and other photography products. This month we made the decision to move from DVD delivery of photos to 16gb USB memory cards.

Now there are several very good reasons for this; Firstly 16gb allows storage of HD video of which we have now started to offer as a bolt on to our existing wedding photography packages. Secondly, we just happened to stumble upon a neat fully branded and custom designed memory card manufacturer!, thirdly and most importantly.. well; occasionally brides have tried to view the DVD discs on their tv, rather than viewing on their computer, thinking they were slide-shows, when in fact DVD discs are used because they just offer more storage than a traditional CD.

Photos are not meant to be viewed on a tv! While this may seem to work, and may be a very convenient way of viewing your photos with your family… We must stress that a tv is not the same as a computer monitor and therefore will not show photos at their very best. The resolution will be all wrong and some of the wedding photography may appear stretched or even pixelated.

Another obvious thing the mention is that discs can get scratched easily, whereas our USB sticks are credit card shape, so they should fit neatly into your wallet or purse allowing you to carry the full set of photos with you wherever you go! So below we thought it best to show you the new USB cards and how they ‘snap’ open allowing the USB to be slotted into your computer USB port.

Logistics of wedding photography

We’ve always said that you could be the best photographer in the world, but if you logistically get just one thing wrong on a wedding day it could be your last wedding! That’s not to frighten anyone off becoming a wedding photographer, as it definitely is the best job in the world. The truth of the matter however, is there are no second chances in wedding photography! So to be the best wedding photographer means not only providing world class images in any given weather conditions but also providing a service that is second to none and equally important of we feel; getting the timings and logistics throughout the day spot on.

This smooth running of the wedding day is something however that comes with practice and experience and is almost impossible to learn on any course, website or photography blog. It took us around 35 weddings before everything became second nature and we could function without thinking and knew exactly what to expect next or where to be and where to stand. If you continually shot the same wedding every Saturday then this problem wouldn’t arise but its the very fact that wedding photographers shoot at different venues, churches and with different sized wedding parties in different weather conditions that causes this need to logistically control the days events.

Its this very reason why a wedding photographer is more than just someone who has the correct kit or knowledge of a camera and can produce a great photo. Its this reason why brides should avoid having their “uncle bob” shoot their wedding. Uncle bob may well own a £5,000 Nikon D4 and do great portraits of his grandchildren but has he the experience and personality to control the 100 guests when it starts raining? Will he logistically control the days events to ensure he delivers the large group photograph when it suddenly starts pouring with rain outside and all the guests are on their second or third pint at the bar!

Also coming with experience is what to deliver in terms of photographs and what a bride actually expects from her wedding set. Although all brides are different and may want different styles or presets on their photos, The majority in our experience still expect quite a lot of the traditional key moments of the day captured correctly. This is why we at Kapow deliver a wide variety of traditional and candid photos edited in a wide variety of options for each customer. We cover all the bases. We know and understand through experience what each bride likes and expects from her set of wedding photos. This is also cleverly done without imposing ourselves on the bride and grooms big day too much.

For more information on becoming a wedding photographer and you can checkout our new iphone app The wedding photographer’s starter kit available for £1.49 on the app store. Its a great resource and tool that can be used for anyone starting out as a wedding photographer.
