Behind the Scenes of a Photography Business

I Can't believe we are half way through January already and the christmas rush of family portraits seems long gone now. While its quiet in terms of actual photography for Kapow there is always loads of work to be done behind the scenes as you can imagine there is for any business. This week I have two meetings set up for potential wedding customers in Swansea and Dave has one meeting set up for a corporate photography shoot in Newport. Besides these I am constantly working on search engine optimisation (seo) for this website and another website that I run also. While we now seem to have cracked the bing search engine for many of our keyphrases such as ...

South Wales wedding photographer

I have been heartened this morning to see us jump from page 11 to page 4 in google for the search term...

wedding photographer swansea

and onto page one in 8th place of google for ...

wedding photographer cwmbran

This may seem like IT or web development work and not photography, but we believe that if you want to be a succesfull at wedding photography or run any sort of business or photography business for that matter you need to be hitting the heights on the internet aswell as being able to take good photographs and use a camera. All round skills are extremely important, especially if you want to maximise the potential of your photography business.

Scince the launch of Kapow photography in May 2009 we have seen a steady increase or SERP (search engine ranking position) boost from both google, bing and yahoo search engines. This may seem like a bit of a black art, but fortunately due to myself and Dave having an excellent grounding and past history in IT, programming and web development it makes this side of the business fairly straight forward for us. Until we are ranking on page 1 for all of our search terms we are currently using google adwords for our advertising. This morning I was fortunate to stumble across a page rank 6 .edu photography blog and earlier this week also got some valuable backlink juice from a page rank 8 .edu domain. These were pinged immediatley and with fresh content being written in blogs such as this on our news page we seem to be advancing at a rapid rate. Bing we are extemely pleased with, for the search term wedding photographer cwmbran we are ranked in 1st, 2nd and 7th position with www.kapowphotography.co.uk being 1st and 2nd and www.dave-powell.com being 7th. Its fortunate that we have the domains www.Dave-Powell.com and www.karlbaker.com which are both 6 years old and 10 years old respectively. This adds valuable weight to any website and by using three domains and a variation of the content of this website we are able to measure our progress in this area.

We are also continuing with our flyer drop programme, and have some fantastic glass stands to display them in.These are being distributed around South Wales wedding venues, in florists, bridal shops and other wedding related businesses. Dave has also been busy this month writing photography articles for the Living Wales magazine aswell as covering the Glan Yr Afon squash tournament.

February will soon be upon us no doubt and our first wedding of 2010 takes place on 20th February in Neath with another wedding the following week in Newport. So its important that while its quiet with the actual photography work we continue to utilize the precious time this month on internet marketing techniques, sales and other products and sidelines that will serve us well in future months. We also have started a facebook group and are planning some photowalks in the not too distant future so if you would like to add us as a friend on facebook we can be found as "Kapowphotographers" or by clicking the link here

Personally in terms of photography this month, I haven't had much chance to get out with the camera. But Dave has managed to get some excellent snow photography and his photo of the church in Cwmbran and this is a great addition to our Welsh landscape photography portfolio which we are building at a steady pace and definately be used for the Kapow christmas cards next year I think !
